There’s nothing like a freshly grilled, hot pizza, straight out of a brick oven. But for most people, the closest place to get one is their local pizza restaurant. The good news is that you don’t need to go to Italy and spend thousands of dollars on an oven.

With a portable cast iron outdoor pizza oven, you can easily cook your own pizza at home in minutes. In this Deeco DM-0039-IA-C review we’ll be zooming in on what this Aztec Allure cast iron pizza oven and chiminea promises to deliver.

Key Features of Deeco DM-0039-IA-C Pizza Oven

First of all, the oven is made from cast iron, which means it’s heavy and durable (the video below shows how cast iron cookware are made). It features an area to make a wood fire and a stainless steel barbecue grill on top. Pizzas of up to 14″ can be cooked on the grill, which is pretty big.

Other features include a removable drawer for cleaning, rain lid, fiberglass lining to lock in heat, spark guard screen door, log grates, and a tailored cover. That’s a whole lot of features, isn’t it?

Next, let’s take a look at the dimension of this great looking outdoor oven. The fireplace is about 44″ high and weighs around 230 lbs.

Where it scores well

So that takes care of the features, but what about the performance? Is it worth buying a cast iron pizza oven? Below we’ll discuss some of the pros and cons of the oven that one should take into consideration before buying.

The pros of cast iron: it’s durable. Cast iron will last forever and is extremely resistant to outdoor weather. However, being iron, it will rust a bit if left to the elements outdoors all the time.

This can be avoided by wiping it down from time to time with vinegar and coating it with cooking oil. However if you’re wary of rust, this may not be the best oven for you.

The nice thing about this pizza oven is that it gives off great heat. It will cook pizzas perfectly and crisply, giving it that wood fired taste and quality.

I had the chance to try it with one of my favorite pizza recipes. Well, I have to admit that the first few trials did not go that well but once I figured things out, I’m pleasantly surprise by how well my pizza turned out.

The cast iron retains heat for a very long time, so after the pizza is done, it still gives off a nice fire for warming or sitting around. Cooking the pizza may take a little getting used to, but after a few attempts it’s easy to get the hang of it.

Where it can do better

One negative comment that is often voiced in many oven reviews that discusses this Deeco pizza oven is its size. It’s a tad too small and low, a little bigger and taller would have made it perfectly sized.

This could be bothersome for tall people who don’t want to bend down constantly to check on their pizza. One way of getting around it is to put the oven on top of stacked up blocks of brick until it reaches the desired height.

Another problem with the size is that the wood can’t be too large, or else it won’t fit in the oven. Again, it is a design flaw but not a major one. This can be easily solved by simply buying smaller wood pieces, using wood chips, or hacking the wood you do have into smaller pieces. Troublesome I agree, but not a showstopper.

The hinged door is also somewhat cheaply made. This could be an issue if it breaks or comes loose and heat escapes too much while cooking. You need this kind of oven to stay nice and hot.

This oven is extremely heavy. That could be a good thing or a bad thing. If you’re going to be leaving the oven in one spot in your backyard and it won’t be moved around a lot, that’s fine. The oven should not be moved around frequently and is too heavy to lift alone. But again, being heavy, means it is durable and will last through the weather and wind without taking a beating.

In the end…

Deeco DM-0039-IA-C outdoor pizza oven is not the perfect product that we are seeking for. While it comes with great set of features, there are few design issues that we have to bear with. Some flaws are minor but requires us to go the extra mile to overcome it.

But if you ask me, my personal experience says that this oven is capable of making great pizza. Fortunately, I’m not that tall so the height issue does not bother me. My kids love the pizza that’s baked in our yard using Deeco’s oven more than what we order in from Domino’s.

In the end, all things said and done, the choice is yours. No product is without its flaws. You have to make your own judgement if the flaws are something that you can live with. For me, there are not many options when it comes to candidates for the best outdoor oven and Deeco DM-0039-IA-C is one of them.
